Composite Fillings

Composite Fillings - Newmarket dentists by Woo Dental

If you have cracked teeth or suffer from cavities, your dentist will likely suggest a filling. A filling will, quite literally, fill in the parts of your teeth that are broken, cracked, worn down, or decaying.

Composite fillings are just one of the number of materials used for this procedure. Composite fillings are a tooth-coloured material. They are resin-based and are a cheaper alternative to gold and porcelain fillings.

Steps taken when filling a tooth

  1. Once the dentist has assessed that you’re in need of a filling, they will numb the area with local anesthesia.
  2. Second, a drill or laser is used to remove any decayed area. Your dentist will test the area as well to make sure the decayed part of the tooth is gone.
  3. Next, the dentist will prepare the tooth that needs to be filled by cleaning it. Depending on the severity of decay, the dentist might also add a liner to protect the nerve.
  4. For composite fillings, the dentist will need to apply it in layers. After each layer, a light will be used to help them harden faster.
  5. Once all the layers are filled and hardened, the dentist will proceed to trim, shape, and polish the filling.

Aftercare and maintenance

After your composite fillings have been placed, stay away from food that’s too acidic or sugary. These can cause the filling to wear down a lot faster. Avoid biting down on food that’s too hard, like candy. Chewing on ice isn’t advisable either as this could cause the filling to fall out. If this does happen, make sure to visit your dentist in Newmarket as soon as you can.

Although composite fillings aren’t permanent, they do last anywhere from 5 to 10 years. Depending on oral health, they may even last longer. When brushing and flossing, make sure to be careful of that area. Don’t be too aggressive with your brushing and flossing. If you’re someone who grinds their teeth, you may benefit from using a nightguard.
