Prophylaxis (teeth cleaning)

Prophylaxis (teeth cleaning) - Newmarket dentists by Woo Dental

The mouth contains a lot of microorganisms and bacteria, which can be both harmful and beneficial. Gum disease occurs when there are signs of inflammation and bleeding. Prophylaxis refers to a procedure for cleaning teeth thoroughly and reducing gum inflammation. This procedure helps in preventing periodontal diseases.

The regular dental visit involves a series of examinations before the dental cleaning. Teeth cleaning includes a dental exam in which the dentist will detect any signs of problems in your mouth. In some cases, your dentist may also perform an X-ray to check the condition of your inner teeth and jaw. Afterwards, your dentist proceeds with the teeth cleaning.

Eliminating plaque and tartar

Using a mirror and a brush, the dentist will scrape off the visible tartar and plaque from your teeth. Most often, tartar and plaque are found between the gums and teeth.

Electric brushing

The dentist brushes the teeth with an electric brush to fully clean the teeth. Also, your dentist will use abrasive toothpaste after the scaling.

Expert flossing

With the help of floss, the dentist identifies the areas where most tartar hides and effectively removes the tartar.

Giving fluoride treatment

Applying fluoride treatment is the final step in cleaning. Your dentist uses a foamy gel to the mouthpiece, which you must wear for a minute. Upon removing the mouthpiece, the dentist will apply a fluoride varnish to make your teeth shiny.

Your smile is the first thing people notice about you. But what if your teeth aren’t as white and bright as they could be? The good news is that there are a lot of ways to improve your smile.  Schedule an appointment with your Newmarket dentist and restore those pearly whites.
