Gum recession

Gum Recession - Newmarket dentists by Woo Dental

A gum recession occurs whenever the surrounding gum tissues recede, leaving the teeth exposed. Due to gum recession, bacteria may start to accumulate because of the formation of gum pockets. When it is left untreated, tooth loss may occur. Even though gum recession is considered a common dental problem, people do not quickly notice them.

It can happen to anyone, but here are some of the most common causes of gum recession:

Periodontal diseases

A bacterial gum infection damages gum tissue and the bone that holds your teeth in place.

Regardless of how well you follow a proper oral hygiene routine, you cannot do much about your genes if your genes cause gum recession.

Brushing your teeth too hard

Brushing your teeth too hard can wear off the enamel of your teeth, which later on leads to receding of gums.

Poor oral hygiene habits

Poor oral hygiene can lead to a buildup of tartar and plaque, which can destroy your teeth and affect your jaw.

Hormonal changes

For women, changes in hormone levels can make the gums more sensitive and prone to gum recession.

Clenching the teeth

When you clench your teeth, you put too much pressure on your teeth to make your gums recede in the long run.

Good oral hygiene is essential for preventing gum recession. If you have observed any change in your mouth, consult your dentist to help you right away.
