What is Periodontal (Gum) Disease?

What is periodontal gum disease - Newmarket dentists by Woo Dental

Periodontitis is a severe gum infection. The infection is due to bacteria that accumulate on the teeth. Bacteria enter and thrive in pockets below the gum line, causing an infection. As a result, the tissue and bone holding teeth in place are broken down, leading to loss of teeth.

Once your dentist treated your periodontitis and maintained proper and oral hygiene, you can keep healthy gums and teeth. An early sign of periodontitis is gingivitis, where the infection flares up only on your gums. The gums become inflamed and soon bleed.

People who suffer from periodontitis experience the following signs :

  • Gums that are bleeding, red, and swollen and receding
  • Teeth are loose and are sensitive. Pus surrounds the teeth.
  • Chronic bad breath
  • Chewing is painful
  • Noticeable change in your bite

During the spreading of the infection, your teeth’ supporting bones and soft tissues may also become affected. Eventually, it can result in bone and gum loss, leading to tooth loss or extraction. When severe, this type of periodontitis typically ends in surgery.

The level of symptoms can be extreme or even nonexistent for some people. It is best to contact your dentist if you experience any of the symptoms mentioned. Using a dental probe, your dentist will examine your gums for infection.
