Wisdom teeth extractions

wisdom teeth removal - Newmarket dentists by Woo Dental

Extraction of a tooth is a dental procedure performed when a tooth is severely damaged, decayed, or injured. For most dentists, this is the last resort since saving teeth is their top priority. Among the treatments available to keep your tooth from being extracted are root canal therapy, dental crowns, and veneers.

In cases of severe damage and an impacted wisdom tooth,  your dentist will perform a tooth extraction. The procedure relieves the pain and prevents the spread of infection.

Why is Extraction of Wisdom Tooth Done?

There are several reasons why Newmarket dentist removes  wisdom teeth:

  • A wisdom tooth can become stuck inside the gums or jawbone, resulting in pain.
  • Your teeth may be compressed or angled incorrectly.
  • There are cavities or gum diseases in your mouth.
  • The size of your mouth is too small, and your jaw can longer accommodate extra molars.

During the Surgery

You’ll receive a local anesthetic from your dentist before having a wisdom tooth extracted. The anesthesia will numb the area so you will not feel any pain. As a precaution, your Newmarket dentist may ask you to avoid eating or drinking anything on the night before surgery. The dentist will open up the gum tissue and remove any bone covering the wisdom tooth. The tooth separates as the dentist cuts the tissue from the bone. To complete the procedure, he stitches the extracted area.

Though there are stitches that dissolve in time, he will inform you if the stitches need removal in most cases.
